In the context of the 7th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health of the World Health Organization that will take place in Budapest from 5 to 7 July 2023, Professor Nikos Papadopoulos, head of the Allergy Department of the Second Pediatric Clinic of Athens, will participate as a speaker at a parallel session about he contribution of pan-European research collaboration to evidencebased zero pollution and health policy

The EU Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) has partnered with the EU Commission’s DG Environment, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) to organize a parallel session during the 7th WHO Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, taking place on Thursday 6th July at 13:00-14:15 CET..

More than 20 ongoing research projects – supported with an EU contribution of over €150 million and involving more than 300 research groups – are tackling the impacts of urban indoor and outdoor pollution, air quality, chemical exposures and micro and nanoplastics on human health. A panel moderated by HEAL will showcase the outcomes of four large-scale collaborative initiatives – the European Urban Health Cluster, European Cluster on Health Impacts of Micro- and Nanoplastics, Green Deal Health Cluster and Indoor Air Quality Cluster – and their potential to inform policy implementation measures.

According to the United Nations, the “average temperature of Earth’s surface is now about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s (before the industrial revolution) and warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The last decade (2011-2020) was the warmest on record, and each of the last four decades has been warmer than any previous decade since 1850.... Because the Earth is a system, where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence changes in all others.”

Climate change is global, affecting everyone. Rising temperatures, warming oceans, rising sea levels, and accelerated melting of glaciers are some of the measurable effects of climate change, along with intense droughts, increased air pollution, water scarcity, earlier and more intense pollen seasons, severe fires, flooding, catastrophic storms, and declining biodiversity. People with allergies and asthma are susceptible to these effects of climate change and must frequently adapt their health care as well as aspects of their daily lives. It is essential, therefore, that health care practitioners also adapt and find new approaches for managing allergies and asthma with consideration of changing climates and environments.

Specialists such as allergy/clinical immunology physicians can help their patients identify triggers, prevent worsening of symptoms, and maintain quality of life amidst changes in their environments. They can give proper advice to their patients as well as policymakers on how to face this growing concern.

Martin, Yoon-Seok Chang, Elham Hossny, Kari Nadeau, Nikos Papadopoulos, Tari Haahtela, Gennaro D'Amato, David Peden) will discuss topics such as: What are the current impacts of climate change, how climate change can increase exposure to allergens, who suffers most from climate change and how we can mitigate the effects of climate change.

Pediatric Asthma is a chronic disease requiring regular monitoring. publication by the PeARL think tank describes for the first time the range of actual monitoring practices globally and compares them with practices perceived as optimal. With 1319 health care professionals from 88 countries participating, there was consistency both between and within different countries in paediatric asthma monitoring. Thus, e.g. visits for severe asthma in children take place every 1-4 months and last for 10'-40' in the large majority of settings. Symptoms, control, adherence to treatment, comorbidities and lung function are the top priorities for monitoring. An unmet need to intensify between-visit monitoring, taking advantage of mHealth tools was revealed.

Paediatric Asthma in Real Life (PeARL) is a think tank set up by the Respiratory Effectiveness Groupconsisting of health care professionals, clinical academics, and expert patient representatives with expertise in and professional exposure to paediatric asthma. Asthma monitoring was prioritized in a previous PeARL Report evaluating unaddressed clinical needs in pediatric asthma.
